Why it's problematic:

• Colonialism: The term comes from a Western perspective and often implies exoticism or inferiority, linked to the era of imperialism and "Orientalism," as explored by Edward Said.

• Outdated: Fell out of common use by the 1960s and has strong negative associations for many.

• Racial Othering: Groups diverse Asian populations into a monolithic "other," ignoring cultural specifics. 

What to use instead:

• For people: "Asian," "East Asian," "Southeast Asian," or specific nationalities (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese).
